September 2008 | New flying ambassador of the „world headquarter of sport“
The Franconian town of Herzogenaurach is a place known to actors in global business: International concerns such as Adidas or Puma or the Schaeffler Group, which recently acquired the automotive supplier Continental, have their registered offices there. Form now on, Herzogenaurach, the birth place of soccer star Lothar Matthäus, will also be named among the airports of Europe because a Canadair jet of Eurowings has recently been named after that Franconian city.
Like the big Lufthansa jets, the planes of the regional subsidiaries can now also bear the names of German cities and towns. The „Herzogenaurach“ with the identification D-ACRH is the aircraft of the Eurowings fleet to have this honor.
"Godmother" of the plane is the wife of the mayor of Herzogenaurach: During a festive ceremony in the Eurowings aircraft hall at Nuremberg airport, Uta Hacker, in the presence of numerous visitors and guests of honor - among them representatives of Lufthansa and the aforenamed companies, christened the CRJ plane which had been provided with brand new leather chairs in the gray Lufthansa design. „Managers from all parts of the world will in future not only fly to Herzogenaurach but also by it , Dr. German Hacker, her husband, said. With the headquarters of three global players, the city of only 23,000 inhabitants was playing a much more important part in industry than the number of inhabitants suggested, the First Mayor added. And, of course, also a substantially higher population of business travelers. Therefore, it was obvious that his city now finally also had „its own plane“ from the Lufthansa regional fleet.

„An A340 of the Lufthansa already bears the name of Nuremberg, an Airbus 320 is called Erlangen, and Fürth is represented by an A300-600", Karl-Heinz Krüger, managing director of Flughafen Nürnberg GmbH, added. With a 50-seater jet, the city of Herzogenaurach as „world headquarter of sport“ now is also a member of the Franconian fleet of Lufthansa. The former CTO of Eurowings was extremely glad to witness the christening ceremony: „I have maintained a very special relationship with Eurowings to this day. And thinking of this hall, I have many agreeable remembrances.“
Opening the ceremony, Eurowings Accountable Manager Peter Kranich had welcomed the guests to this first-ever event for the regional airline on behalf of Eurowings and Lufthansa: „From today, this aircraft will carry the name of the city of Herzogenaurach into the world.“ He briefly introduced the plane to the guests and the delegation from Herzogenaurach. The jet was 26 meters long, had a span of 21 meters, its weight was 24 tonnes and its maximum cruising speed 850 kilometers per hour.
After the welcome, the mayor's wife, christened the plane: She poured a bottle of champagne over the plane's nose of the jet saying: „I baptize you and you shall bear the name of Herzogenaurach“. Following the baptizing ceremony for the guests from Herzogenaurach, this city of sport, was a look behind the scenes of the airport and a tour of the Eurowings aircraft works. At the end of the visit the guests traveled home - in two mini buses instead of in "their" plane.
