Book your flight to Košice through Eurowings, and discover the second-largest city in Slovakia, a beautiful city with a delightful historical city centre that has been preserved magnificently to this day. Košice lies on the River Hornád and is at the centre of the eastern Carpathians. First mentioned in 1230 with the name Villa Cassa, on 7 May 1369, the city was the first in Europe to receive a coat of arms signed by the king, something still celebrated each year on this day. In July 2013, Košice was European Capital of Culture along with Marseille.
Take a long walk through the historical city centre, the largest protected urban area in Slovakia by surface area. The most important building is the St Elisabeth Cathedral, an imposing Gothic building and the biggest church in Slovakia, towering over the whole city. The fifteenth-century high altar is decorated with 48 Gothic murals. Climb the north tower and enjoy an incredible view over the city and its surrounding countryside. The old town with a beautiful pedestrian zone surrounds the cathedral. The heritage of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy cannot be missed here – you will find many beautiful buildings from the period, ranging from classicism to art nouveau. Passageways lead to small winding alleys dotted with shops and bars. A historical horse-drawn tram passes through the pedestrian zone at regular intervals.
You can see the remains of the medieval city wall in the Archaeological Museum at the end of the pedestrian zone. Between the cathedral and the imposing theatre, there is a beautiful park where water fountains dance to music several times a day. Escape to the surrounding region and visit the impressive ruins of Spiš Castle, a perfect destination for a long hike in the Carpathians. In winter you can also choose between two different skiing regions here. At the beginning of October, Košice plays host to the oldest marathon in Europe, held here since 1924. Let yourself be treated to Slovakia’s hearty cuisine as well, such as Halušky, a kind of noodles with sheep’s cheese and bacon. An excellent wine is grown in the Carpathians on the border with Hungary – take a couple of bottles home with you as a souvenir of your trip to Košice.
