Miami is one of the youngest cities in the USA. It was officially founded in 1896. Just 20 years later it was the popular tourist destination that it is today. The city’s popular Art Deco style came after many hotels on Miami Beach were rebuilt following a hurricane in 1926. The city of Miami itself is not all that large, but the metropolitan area has over 5 million residents. This makes the Miami region the largest tourist city in the USA. Miami Beach and South Beach, which are both located on an island close to the shore, comprise the actual tourist centre with their breathtaking beaches.
Miami is the most exciting when it becomes wet and cold in the north. The hurricane season has passed and the muggy heat of the summer gives way to spring-like temperatures that let you enjoy the beach all winter long. The coast of Florida is a paradise for surfers, sailors, fishers and divers. But the stunning Everglades National park is definitely worth a visit. Flamingos, mangrove forests, alligators and air boat rides are all on the agenda. A trip to the Florida Keys, a chain of islands that can be reached by car via Highway 1, also makes for a nice excursion. Key West in the Caribbean is at the end of the tour.
There is hardly another city in the USA that is so influenced by Latin American culture. Refugees from Cuba and Haiti have left their mark on the cityscape as well as the culture of the city. Miami’s cuisine is highly unique; fish and tropical fruits are common ingredients and it is often referred to as the Floribbean cuisine. The Latin American influence is also noticeable in the city’s night life. Salsa, reggae and son is performed and danced in many clubs. And of course, Miami is also a paradise for shoppers in places like Bal Harbour or the relaxed Coconut Grove. The artist colony Coral Gables is also worth a visit.
