In Linz, situated on the Danube River, you can feel the pulse of Upper Austria. The city boasts a history that dates back to the Celts, who called it "Oppidum Lentos." "Lentia" was the name the Romans gave to the fort they erected there, complete with a bridge over the Danube. In the Middle Ages, Linz was for a short time the seat of the German Emperor, but it has remained the capital of Upper Austria throughout. The well-preserved edifices dating from the city's medieval period are correspondingly imposing. Most of the old buildings from this time are located in the central historic district. Overlooking it all is the castle of Linz, a baroque structure built on ancient foundations that today houses the Castle Museum.
No visitor gets bored quickly in Austria's third-largest city. The historic district, with its old city hall on the main square and plague column, is a wonderful place to stroll through narrow lanes, discovering new niches at every turn. The Baroque Basilica of the Seven Sorrows of St Mary, a pilgrimage church, stands on the Pöstlingsberg. From it you can get a good idea of the history of Linz and a great view of the city and the Danube. A stroll through the city's botanical gardens is also worthwhile, and a ride on an excursion boat down the Danube is good at any time of the year.
Linz made a name for itself worldwide as a city for culture when it launched the Ars Electronica Festival, an annual meeting place for artists and scholars on the topic of electronic technologies of the future. The Klangwolke festival, which opens the Bruckner Festival, is known across the globe as a highlight in the avant-garde music calendar. The Bruckner Festival is held in honor of composer Anton Bruckner, who worked in Linz as a cathedral organist. On a day packed with art and culture, a piece of authentic Linzer Torte will provide sustenance at any of the many cafés. A Eurowings flight to Linz is your best bet for a wonderful city break.
