Picturesque Mytilene is the capital of Lesbos and is situated on the Amali peninsula, one of Lesbos' three major peninsulas. The city has been there for an eternity; settlements were recorded in writing as early as 1000 BC. The city is also known for the ancient battle in 406 BC between Athens and Sparta, which was fought partly in the harbor of Mytilene. The port of Malois Limin, with its ancient jetties dating from the 5th century BC, is still there. While the city center around the port is relatively flat, it is framed on both sides by hills, giving Mytilene the look of an actor at the center of an amphitheater.
If you look at Mytilene from the water, the first thing you notice is the gigantic castle enthroned above the city. It is a legacy of the Byzantines, who built it in the 6th century on the former acropolis, but in 1355 the castle passed to the Genoese. It is a prime destination for tourists interested in history. They will also want to see the ancient theater, which has been carved from the mountain above the city and is well known for its amazing view of the harbor. The old archeology museum presents artifacts from the long history of Lesbos and Mytilene.
Of course, you can also simply stretch out on the beautiful beach of Mytilene and relax after a long day in the Aegean sun. The beachside bars stay open until late in the evening. Many cafés, quaint taverns and restaurants invite you to pass the time and enjoy their offerings. Goat and sheep milk cheese made by hand by farmers on the island are popular. The ouzo from Lesbos is known across the country and the Ouzo Arvanitis and Ouzo Barbagiannis distilleries are world-famous. The island's cuisine features a great deal of fresh fish. The sardines from Kalloni Bay are prized throughout Greece. Take a Eurowings flight to Mytilene (MJT) and get ready for a truly relaxing holiday.
