In ancient times, Samos was a center for trade and knowledge, a unique island and a cosmopolitan city of its day. The island, which is a bit over a kilometer from the mainland of Turkey, was inhabited as early as the beginning of the Stone Age. During the Trojan War, Samos was one of the first to boast a fortified town with a citadel. Hera, queen of the Greek gods and wife of Zeus, has been worshipped here since 1000 BC. Even today you can admire the ruins of the Heraion, as the temple of Hera was called. Sacrificial offerings from across the world of Greece have been found at the site and can be viewed at the Archaeological Museum of the City of Samos.
Want to explore the ancient city of Samos? Travel to the modern city of Pythagorio, erected over the ruins of the one-time cosmopolitan city. It is no accident if the city's name reminds you of the famous mathematician Pythagoras – he, too, came from the island of Samos and is the city's namesake. The most famous structure on the island, the tunnel of Eupalinos, can be found here. The tyrant Polykrates used this tunnel, over 1,000 meters long, to safeguard the city's water supply when it was occupied. It was considered a feat of engineering because it was dug from both ends and connected up almost perfectly. That was an unprecedented achievement for the 6th century BC.
The island of Samos has many springs that make the surrounding area green and fertile. It is perfect for hikers. From rolling hills and steep cliffs to enchanting valleys, Samos shows fresh facets wherever you go. But Samos also offers you heavenly beaches in hidden coves, where you can relax in the Aegean sun and swim in the Mediterranean. The many delicious specialties of the island provide hearty refreshment. Try probatina, mutton marinated in a herb broth and then grilled, or horiatika loukanika tiganita, roast sausage with tomato sauce and peppers. The wine of Samos is also known the world over. It is well worth your while to visit winemakers' cellars and take a few bottles home with you. Enjoy your Eurowings flight to Samos!
