Your Eurowings flight to Macedonia will take you to one of Europe’s newest countries. Most probably, your stay will begin in the capital, Skopje, established by the Romans under the name Colonia Flavia Aelia Scupi. Roman aqueducts, a theater, thermal baths and Roman graves bear witness to Roman times. Bulgarians, Byzantines, Serbs and Ottomans ruled the Macedonia of today and have left their mark in the country’s architecture, language, and cuisine. In the 6th century, the Byzantine emperor Justinian built Skopje’s stone bridges, the emblem of the city. The 15th-century Decorated Mosque is one of the oldest buildings still standing in Skopje.
Lake Ohrid, in the far southwest of Macedonia, is particularly popular among tourists. Since 1980, Lake Ohrid and its namesake, the town of Ohrid, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lake Ohrid is considered to be one of the oldest lakes in the world and has developed unique animal life. A prime example is Ohrid trout, considered a specialty that does not exist anywhere else. Visit the charming Byzantine Church of Sveti Jovan, which overlooks the lake. Southeast of Lake Ohrid and about 200 meters higher is Lake Prespa. The lake, with its long, sandy beaches, is an ideal destination for a summer bathing holiday. At the center of the lake is the island of Golem, a habitat for pelicans and many other water birds.
In Matka Gorge west of Skopje, you can explore both mountain climbing and spelunking. The lake in the gorge is lined with old churches and convents. Macedonia’s high mountains are located in Mavrov National Park. At 2,700 meters, Korab is the highest peak. Mavrov is a great ski area in the winter and offers beautiful scenery for hiking in the summer. The Popova Kula wine estate has made a name for itself with its wines, made from ancient grape varieties that date back to the Romans. It is located in Demir Kapija. You should also get to know Macedonian cuisine, which is full of vegetables, by cooking together with locals, a tradition in Macedonia. Eurowings wishes you all the best for a lovely holiday in Macedonia!
