Like many cities in the southern Balkans, Tivat has had a stormy past. The city once belonged to Venice, another time to Austria, and then to Yugoslavia. But it has always been a key port city and thrives on its special location in the sheltered Bay of Kotor. The harbour, once a port for warships, is used particularly for luxury yachts today. Fittingly, a luxurious resort was established around the Montenegro marina. But the nearby airport also brings many guests to the sunny city midway along the bay.
