Due to the current volcanic activity of Mount Etna, flight operations to and from Sicily are currently being disrupted. For safety reasons, Catania Airport in eastern Sicily has had to impose repeated closures and significant operational restrictions, which also affect our flights. Since the eruption of Mount Etna, Eurowings has also had to cancel individual flights to and from Catania, while other flights have been delayed. Whether flights are diverted, postponed or cancelled depends on the latest assessment by the authorities and the operational options available on site. In recent days, several flights have been diverted to Palermo. Eurowings informs affected guests directly about any changes. We recommend that travellers regularly check the status of their flight via eurowings.com or the Eurowings app.

Due to the total solar eclipse on 12 August, significantly higher traffic volumes are expected across Mallorca throughout the day.

Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) will remain accessible and is not affected by road closures. However, please allow extra time for your journey to the airport.
Please note: checked baggage can only be accepted within 3 hours of your scheduled departure time. Earlier baggage drop-off is not possible due to limited storage capacity at the airport. If you are travelling with hand baggage only, you can proceed directly to security.

Additional staff will be available at the airport to support travellers and help minimise delays.

Eurowings temporarily suspends flights to Erbil

Due to the current situation in Iraq, Eurowings is suspending its flights to Erbil (EBL) as a precautionary measure through August 27. Our flights to and from Tel Aviv (TLV) as well as Beirut (BEY) will continue to operate as scheduled. As always, the safety of our crews and guests remains our highest priority. Our operational teams continue to closely monitor the situation and remain in regular contact with the LHG Security Desk, the relevant authorities and our Eurowings Security Department. This ensures that all operational decisions are taken with the utmost care and responsibility. Affected passengers will be notified immediately. Eurowings is offering them flexible rebooking and refund options in accordance with existing regulations.

The Lufthansa Group is continuously monitoring and assessing the situation in the region and is in close contact with the authorities. The safety of passengers and crew is always the top priority for the Lufthansa Group. Back in March, Eurowings had already decided to suspend its flights to and from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Amman through October 24.

To keep your travels smooth and stress free, new, standardised rules for carrying power banks in hand luggage will apply from 1 January 2026. These updates follow international safety guidelines for lithium‑ion batteries.

What you can still take on board

Power banks remain hand‑luggage only – they cannot go in checked baggage.

Here’s what applies:

• Up to 100 Wh
  → You can bring your power bank without any restrictions.
• 100 to 160 Wh
  → You can bring up to two power banks, each requiring pre‑approval from the airline.
• More than 160 Wh
  → Power banks of this size are not permitted on the aircraft.

A quick pre‑flight check helps:
Make sure the Wh (watt‑hour) rating is visible on your power bank. If it is not printed, it must be clearly traceable through other values such as volts and mAh.

Why these rules are changing

Lithium‑ion batteries can generate heat if they are damaged or misused. The new, harmonised rules help identify and manage potential risks early so your journey stays safe and relaxed.

What this means for you

For most people, nothing major changes. The new guidelines simply make it easier to choose the right power bank and travel well prepared.

The Entry/Exit System (EES) automatically records when non-EU nationals enter and leave the Schengen area, replacing manual passport stamping. It helps monitor short stays and ensure compliance with EU entry and exit rules.
The EES applies only to non-EU nationals and requires a biometric passport for registration and use of automated border controls. EU and Schengen citizens as well as holders of residence permits or long-stay visas are not affected.

Travellers may still begin their journey if a decision on their ETA has not been made by the time of departure. However, we strongly recommend applying as early as possible.

Please note that dual citizens, including those holding a passport from another eligible country, are not exempt and must also obtain an ETA.

In a significant policy update, Qatar nationals planning to travel to the United Kingdom will now be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) prior to their departure. 

Following the submission of the ETA application, a processing fee will be levied, and applicants can expect to receive a response within a reasonable timeframe. Approved ETAs will be electronically linked to the traveller's passport, eliminating the need for physical documents or paper-based visas.

Update: As of now the ETA requirement applies to nationals of Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and UAE. More countries are to follow. Individuals with dual citizenship, including citizens holding a passport from another eligible country, will not be exempted and will still need to obtain an ETA.

Passengers must apply for an ETA before travelling to the UK. If the outcome of their ETA application has not been decided before their departure date, they can still travel to the UK pending a decision.
